Subject: Path to the Death Race
Message: Since 2012, Dion Mindykowski of Newberry has competed in 28 obstacle course races, as well as endurance races such as The Suck and the Winter & Summer Death Races. He will be recounting tales of his first attempt at the 2014 Winter Death Race. This talk provides information about his training the reason he took up endurance racing, and recaps of some of the races that lead up to his participation in the Winter Death Race.
The Death Race is an endurance challenge held in Pittsfield, Vermont. It is a combination of physical and mental challenges meant to break even the most prepared competitors. The total distance and time is unknown to the racers and typically continues until 10 to 15% of those participating have dropped or have been removed from the race.
At his most recent attempt at the Death Race, Mindykowski lasted 37 hours , completing challenges such as a timed run up a mountain, burpees; pulling large rocks up a mountain to build a stair case; creating a cup from a log; long hikes with a pack weighing 50+ lbs; orienteering; ax making; and even sewing faux buckskin into clothing.
In May of 2014, Mindykowski completed The North East Suck, a 12 hour endurance challenge that involved, 1,000s of reps of exercises, swimming, carrying 150 lbs up and down a mountain, and a strong man circuit including challenges such as 200lb atlas stone lifts and flipping a section of a telephone pole.
These experiences make for an exciting night of storytelling in the library.
