HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN – High school students from 16 schools throughout the western Upper Peninsula of Michigan will test their knowledge of biology at Michigan Technological University this Wednesday, May 7. Teams of four students each will tackle problems in dissection, molecular biology, field identification and medical laboratory science.
Schools participating are A.D. Johnston (Bessemer), Baraga, Calumet, Chassell, Dollar Bay, Hancock, Houghton, Jeffers (Painesdale), L.L. Wright (Ironwood) Lake Linden-Hubbell, L’Anse, Marquette, Negaunee, Watersmeet, West Iron County and Westwood (Ishpeming).
The problems were designed by undergraduate and graduate biological sciences students from Michigan Tech. The goal of the exercises is to test the high school students’ organizational skills, knowledge of facts and concepts, laboratory skills and creativity.
This is the 25th annual Bioathlon at Michigan Tech.
Each member of the first-place team will receive $200. Members of the second place team will receive $100, and third place team members will receive $50.
While the student teams are working on their problems, their teachers will attend a workshop on fungi and learn some simple activities to help students overcome their fear of fungus. Stacy Cotey, academic advisor for biological sciences at Tech, will conduct the teacher workshop.
Funding for the Bioathlon comes from Michigan Tech’s Admissions Office, the Department of Biological Sciences, and Tech alumni Mark Cowan, Robert and Kathryn DellAngelo, Olive Kimball, Nancy Auer and Janice Glime.
