Small town charity event offers big city features
ESCANABA, MICHIGAN – The Bay de Noc Home Run is a charity race event to be held Saturday, May 24, 2014 at 9:00 am at the Municipal Dock in Ludington Park, Escanaba, Michigan and includes a 10k Run, 5k Run/Walk and Kids Run. Proceeds benefit area homeless families and individuals. Thanks to presenting sponsor, Escanaba Downtown Development Authority, this small town event offers large city race features – such as cash prizes ($3100 total prize purse), chip-timing and USA Track & Field sanction as well as small town comfort and friendliness – with plenty of post race food in a relaxing family atmosphere on Lake Michigan.
Cash prizes are part of a plan to entice elite runners from around the Midwest to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan on Memorial Day weekend, thus helping the event to grow from an expected maximum field of 400 participants this year to a goal of over 2000 in 2017. “While it may seem counter-intuitive to give away cash prizes when you are trying to raise money for charity, the incentive really does make a positive difference in race attendance and therefore in overall long-term fundraising success,” says Race Director, Bobbie Stacey. Besides the goal of raising money for homeless services through a family-friendly health and fitness event, the Bay de Noc Home Run also seeks to “create an opportunity for young area runners to experience professional caliber competition right in their own backyard,” said Stacey. “With continued generous support such as we’ve received from our sponsors these past seven years, we hope to increase the overall prizes in order to meet our 2000 participant goal in four years. Imagine 2000 runners heading east on Ludington Street, what a sight that would be, and what a boost for our community when over half of those runners are visiting from outside of the Central U.P.,” said Stacey.
In 2013, Delta County social services providers identified and served 735 unique homeless individuals, an increase of 225 persons from the previous year. The Bay de Noc Home Run raises money to assist the homeless with critical services that aid the transition to permanent housing and stability. Donations to this cause may be made directly at http://active.com/donate/homerun2014. All proceeds will be used to solve or prevent housing crisis for Delta County families and individuals.
Interested runners and walkers are encouraged to visit the website at www.baydenochomerun.org which contains information about registration, fees, prizes, past results, event schedule, fundraising, volunteer opportunities and more.
