The program was held through the Michigan Farmers Market Association (MIFMA) in January and February, 2014. The program encourages farmer’s market managers to pursue leadership skills and professional development in topics essential to market management. Topics covered in the program were; Farmers Market Planning and Management, Preparing for Farmers Market Growth, State of Michigan Licensing & Regulations, Overview of Food Assistance Programs, Collecting & Sharing Farmers Market Data, Grant Writing to Grow Your Market, Marketing Your Market and Planning for Events & Entertainment.
“It was a great opportunity to participate in this statewide program. The certification process was very comprehensive. It is very helpful to have all this information and to meet the 21 other market managers around the State of Michigan who participated. Farmers markets are run in a wide variety of locations and sizes. It is interesting to look at all of the different ways farmers markets are successful and their commonalities,” explained Zyburt.
The Downtown Marquette Farmers Market will be celebrating its fifteenth year of continuous operation in Downtown Marquette. In 2013 the Market drew over 15,687 people with an average weekly attendance of 700. The Market is comprised of fresh produce, handmade goods, and artisan wares.
