The Northwestern Region of Lower Michigan was the only part of the service area which showed population growth. While it is mixed among the counties in that region, more grew than declined. On the other end, the Northeastern Region of Lower Michigan had every county show a population loss. All of the other regions showed a mix, but overall a decline in population.
During this period Median Household Income began rising in Michigan at a higher rate. Overall 37 counties saw their median household income on the rise, while 14 declined. However of the 37 that were on the rise, 16 had their percentage of State Median income rise at a higher rate than the State. The Northeastern region of Lower Michigan, had their percentage of median income in relation to Michigan rise in 6 of the 10 counties.
With respect to poverty, most counties 35 saw a decline in their percentage in poverty, and 59%, 30 counties saw a rise in their percentage of population holding bachelors’ degrees.
Finally with respect to jobless rates, only one county is lower than Michigan, and all but two counties, saw a lowering of their jobless rate in February. No real surprises here with seasonality.
On the Northern Initiatives front, Northern Initiatives have concluded agreements to manage loan funds in cooperation with Baldwin Township (Delta County), the Village of Baraga, Escanaba, Gladstone, Iosco County, Iron County, Ironwood, Kingsford, Luce County, Marquette County, Menominee, Ontonagon County, Rogers City, and Spalding Township (Menominee County). These funds have been transferred or will be shortly to our management. We greatly appreciate the trust of these communities to partner with us to grow small businesses in their community.
The source of these dollars is the Community Development Block Grant program.
