NMU Receives Grants

MARQUETTE, Mich. — Northern Michigan University recently received two grants from external agencies to support an artists-in-residence partnership and a residency by a violinist.

Melissa Matucsak, director of the DeVos Art Museum, was awarded $20,400 for the museum’s partnership with the Rabbit Island artists-in-residence program. The Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs provided the funding to support artists’ time creating new work, along with the production of a related exhibition and an accompanying catalogue. The Rabbit Island Residency, founded in 2011, is located on a remote island in Lake Superior. Artists who will be in residence on Rabbit Island this summer will participate in an exhibition at the DeVos in August-September.

Dan Truckey, director of the Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center, received $10,000 from the National Endowment for the Arts to support a residency by violinist Regina Carter. The Northern Nights series he directs will partner with the NMU Jazz Festival to bring Carter to Marquette for a three-day residency. She will conduct workshops and clinics and perform at two public events.
