Portrayal of John Muir at NMU

MARQUETTE, Mich.—Famed naturalist John Muir will tell his life story in a one-man performance by Steve Waller at Northern Michigan University’s Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center. This will be the closing event for the center’s exhibition titled “U.P. Mosaic: A working landscape for its people.” It is scheduled at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 16, in 105 Cohodas Hall at NMU. Admission is free, with donations encouraged.

Waller lives in a solar- and wind-powered home north of Marquette. He was formerly a wilderness guide and co-director of Canadian Wilderness Voyage program, a wilderness canoe adventure program in the Quetico Provincial Park in Ontario, Canada.

As Muir, he will detail life-changing experiences and adventures, from the naturalist’s early years in Scotland, to growing up in the Midwest and then moving to the Sierras. Muir was a self-taught Wisconsin farm boy who became a renowned and influential activist, preservationist, writer and co-founder of the Sierra Club.
