(MARQUETTE, MICHIGAN) — The third annual Marquette Senior High School Poetry Out Loud Recitation Championship will be held Wednesday, January 8th, starting at 12:40 in the Shirley Smith Little Theatre at MSHS..
The MSHS Champion will advance to the Michigan State Championship in East Lansing on March 13th and 14th. The State Championship is sponsored by the Michigan Humanities Council.
Participating high schools host their own competitions and select a student to represent their school at the state finals. The state champion will advance to the national finals in Washington, D.C. and compete for a $20,000 college scholarship. School champions will be invited to participate in the Michigan Youth Arts Festival, a three-day event featuring the finest artistic talent in Michigan high schools. More than 33,000 students from at least 50 Michigan high schools have participated in Poetry Out Loud programs since 2005.
The MSHS Poetry Recitation Championship will consist of two rounds, with each contestant reciting one poem from the Poetry Out Loud online anthology in each round, following rules set by the National Endowment for the Arts.
