NMU Honors Students Present at Conference

MARQUETTE, Mich.— Three Northern Michigan University students presented original research at the National Collegiate Honors Council Conference in New Orleans, La. The students were Rozemary Howard of Gaylord, Charlotte Cialek of South Lyon, and Jessica Ulrich of Fenton.

Howard, who presented “Detection of mRNA in dendrites via FISH,” is a zoology major. Cialek, who presented “Introducing stabilization mutations K82D and N108K in single-chain human hemoglobin α1-β1 dimer,” graduated in December with a degree in biochemistry and was selected as the student commencement speaker. Ulrich, who presented “Enduring struggle for freedom: the Atlantic slave trade and modern sex trafficking,” is a biology secondary education major. Also attending the conference was Michael Joy, NMU professor and Honors Program director.

The National Collegiate Honors Council is the official governing body of United States honors programs. According to Joy, NMU sends students annually to the conference to present work, network with other honors students, hear presentations and take in the cultural experience of the host city.

“[Howard, Cialek and Ulrich] were excellent representatives of Northern,” Joy said. “All three were complimented on their work on many occasions at the conference and on campus.”
