The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) announced Wednesday that seven Michigan counties will use $2,500,000 in state Category F funds to upgrade roads in urban areas to all-season status. The “all-season” classification is important to commercial shippers because seasonal weight restrictions on even the smallest section of commercial roadway can severely restrict shipping operations and limit a company’s ability to compete and thrive year-round.
“Michigan’s transportation system is vital to job providers,” said State Transportation Director Kirk T. Steudle. “That’s why we are pleased to help improve all-season commercial routes that link current and future manufacturers to state routes.”
Projects have been approved for Transportation Economic Development Fund (TEDF) Category F funds in Calhoun, Grand Traverse, Jackson, Lenawee, Marquette, Muskegon and Washtenaw counties. The projects will be completed at a total cost of $6,025,750, with $3,525,750 in local matching funds. The improvements will include road reconstruction, resurfacing, and shoulder and guardrail upgrades.
The TEDF provides funding for transportation improvements that enhance the state’s ability to compete in a global economy, promote economic growth and improve the quality of life in Michigan. Eligible applicants for Category F grants are county, city and village road agencies within counties having a population of 400,000 or less. Funding is awarded on a competitive basis with a minimum local match of 20 percent. Go online at www.michigan.gov/tedf for more information about the program.
