Documentary film fans and “Anatomy of a Murder” buffs are invited to view the film “Anatomy ’59” and meet John Pepin, the film’s producer/director, on Tuesday, September 10 at 7:00 pm in the Peter White Public Library’s community room.
Subtitled “The Making of a Classic Motion Picture”, Anatomy ‘59 details the events culminating on June 29, 1959 at the world premiere, held simultaneously in Ishpeming and Marquette, of the critically acclaimed courtroom thriller based on the best selling book by John Voelker. “Anatomy ‘59: documents those eight weeks in 1959 when Hollywood came to Marquette. Through actual film footage, personal accounts from the surviving stars and locals who served as extras in the film, home movie clips and still photos, Pepin tells the 1959 story of big name Hollywood stars on location in Big Bay, Ishpeming, Michigamme, and Marquette. Anatomy ‘59 was released in 2009 in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Otto Preminger film starring James Stewart, Lee Remick, George C. Scott, Ben Gazzara and Arthur O’Connell with the award winning soundtrack by Duke Ellington.
Independent film maker and veteran Mining Journal reporter, John Pepin, will lead a question and answer session after the documentary film screening and discuss the making of this film and other projects he has worked on. Pepin is an Ishpeming native who grew up on Barnum Street, the same road where the Voelker family home used in the movie is located as well as The Mather Inn where the cast stayed during the production of Anatomy of a Murder. Anyone involved with the 1959 film is encouraged to attend and add to the discussion.
DVD sale and signing opportunity will follow the program which has no admission charge. For more information call the Peter White Public Library at 226-4318 or visit www.pwpl.info.
