“Death at the Lighthouse: A Grand Island Riddle”

(Marquette, Michigan) — Historian and author of A Face in the Rock: The Tale Of A Grand Island Chippewa, Loren Graham celebrates the release of his newest book, “Death at the Lighthouse: A Grand Island Riddle” on Sunday, September 15 at 2:00pm in the Peter White Public Library Shiras room.

In 1972, Graham purchased the Old North Lighthouse on Grand Island near Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Built in 1867 and standing 200 feet above Lake Superior, the cracked and crumbling yellow brick lighthouse contained a 1908 Detroit Free Press clipping. It read, “Grand Island Lighthouse keeper and his assistant believed to be victims of brutal murder and robbery.” Graham set out to find out the details of this mystery. Death at the Lighthouse is the summary of Graham’s thirty years of research which includes an analysis of all the various factions of the U. P.

Loren Graham has written widely both on the history of science and of the Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. He has received numerous awards and one of his books was a finalist for a National Book Award. He was a professor for many years at both the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University. He winters in Massachusetts, and in the summers in Old North Lighthouse on Grand Island.

A book sale & signing follows the presentation which is open to the public at no admission charge. For more information call the library at 226-4318 or visit www.pwpl.info.
