(Ishpeming, Michigan) – On behalf of the Marquette County Labor Council, AFL-CIO, I am pleased to invite you and your organization to participate in the 24th Annual Labor Day Festival!
The event will be held in Ishpeming on Labor Day, Monday, September, 2nd 2013. The Festival will begin at 11:00 a.m. with a parade along Euclid Street, Main Street, Division Street and Lakeshore Drive. After, there will be a picnic and rally from 12 noon to 4:00 p.m. at the Cliffs Shaft Mine Museum (Marquette Range Iron Mining Heritage Theme Park) and the Lake Bancroft Park on Lakeshore Drive and Euclid Streets.
The theme for this year is “Labor: Still Standing Strong”. We encourage Local Unions to march and enter floats in the parade that reflect this theme. Prizes for floats are 1st place $100, 2nd place $75 and 3rd place $50. Parade line up starts at 9:00 a.m. and will be based upon a draw from the hat.
Marq Tran will be providing transportation to and from Ishpeming from both the Marquette (JC Penney Mall parking lot) and Negaunee (Lakeview School parking lot). The scheduled times are as follows:
JC Penney Westwood Mall 9:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.
Lakeview School 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.
Cliffs Shaft 12:00, 1:00, 2:00, 3:00 and 4:00
Parking will be available at the Cliff Shaft and the Ishpeming Elks Club.
We will have a picnic lunch. The cost of lunch tickets will be $5.00. The menu includes the following; your choice of a pasty or 2 hot dogs, desert and pop. Tickets for adult beverages $2.00, pop and water will be $1.00 each.
The Picnic and Rally will include music by Fast Eddies Blues Band, speeches from elected officials and candidates, along with children’s activities. In addition, The Cliff Shaft volunteers will once again be providing free tours (donations will be accepted and are encouraged!) from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. for those that are interested in visiting the Museum.
***The event is costly to the Labor Council and is labor intensive, so we are requesting that all affiliates and participants contribute as follows:***
1. Make a cash donation to the Labor Council to help defray the cost. Donations may be sent care of the Marquette County Labor Council, 31 Forge Road, Negaunee, MI 49866. Unaffiliated Locals are encouraged to PLEASE make a donation of at least $1.00 per member.
2. Purchase food/beverage tickets at the ticket tent before the Parade begins.
3. Recruit volunteer workers for the day of the event. Please email a list of volunteers (names and phone numbers) to Kathy Carlson at to kcarlson8@charter.netor call at (906) 361-4240.
4. Participate in a planning meeting or give feedback to the committee on ways to improve the event. The next meeting is August 15th, 2013 at 5:30 p.m. at the Carpenters Hall, 1221 Division St., Marquette.
Locals are asked to PLEASE encourage everyone to pitch in so all who attend can enjoy the day!
