Summary of July 15th Meeting of the Gwinn Area Community Schools Board of Education

The Board heard the following Public Comment:

  1. Brenda Veale – commented on the 6-hour day at GMS/GHS and compensation for administrators

Claims in the amount of $595,144 were approved for payment.

Cynthia Filizetti, Building & Site Committee Chair, presented the Board with minutes from July 10th meeting and announced upcoming meetings to be held on August 7th and August 21st at 5:30 pm in the GHS Library.

The Board heard a brief update on athletic programs from Rob Soyring, Athletic Director. The Booster Club’s annual Bean Bag tournament will be held beginning at 6 pm on Saturday, July 27th in Nordeen Park. “Meet the Modeltowners” will be held on Friday, August 23rd.

Interim Superintendent Piereson updated the Board on the following: the anticipated resignation of the elementary/GMS computer/technology teacher; the procedures with calling and posting future Board committee meetings; and State Superintendent Mike Flanagan’s recommendation for county-wide schools and centralized services at the ISD level. Dr. Pierson read correspondence from Connie Joffee and Philip Spade.

Dr. Piereson also presented the Board with his work in reviewing the Board’s difficult and controversial decision to close Gilbert Elementary School. Dr. Piereson reported that he had toured facilities at both Gilbert and KI Sawyer Elementary Schools, held a “Listening Session” to hear the concerns of parents and residents, studied the facility report prepared by Integrated Designs, Inc., reviewed teaching assignments and schedules, reviewed current enrollment and the enrollment projection prepared by Stanfred Consultants, worked on the 2012-13 budget and the 2013-14 budget, reviewed bus schedules, reviewed meeting minutes to try to understand the decision process and have carefully thought about the interests of the entire school district. Dr. Piereson stated that in his judgment, at this point, the most prudent course of action is to implement the Board decision to close Gilbert Elementary School, moving all K-5 students to KI Sawyer Elementary School with the start of the 2013-14 school year. Dr. Piereson’s goal is to move the District forward to develop a long term strategic vision so that the Board and community are not again in this position.

The Board took action on the following:

  • Accepted the resignations of the following personnel:

          1. David Langin – kindergarten teacher, KI Sawyer Elementary School, effective date of resignation – June 28, 2013
