Negaunee, MI – Visitors to the City of Negaunee’s annual Pioneer Days festival this year will once again have the chance to browse downtown for bargains, and perhaps take home a piece of history, thanks to the coordinated efforts of the area’s thrift and antique vendors. The 2nd Annual Pioneer Days Flea Market is a free event held on Friday, July 12 from 11 AM to 5 PM on Iron Street in downtown Negaunee. Tables laden with new and used merchandise, antiques, and collectibles from vendors throughout the region will line both sides of the street.
The Pioneer Days Flea Market is hosted jointly by the antique shops of Negaunee and Ishpeming, which will also feature special sales during the event. Negaunee has six antique shops (three of which are malls with multiple vendors),and a thrift shop. Nearby Ishpeming is home to another antique mall plus an independent shop. Many of the shops are housed in historic buildings and feature original fixtures such as tin ceilings, skylights, and great hardwood floors which further enhance the antique shopping experience.
The event coincides with Negaunee’s popular annual Pioneer Days celebration, which takes place this year from July 8th through Saturday July 12th. Various family-friendly events fill the schedule, including a parade, athletic events, and historic tours, and culminating with a community picnic and fireworks display over Teal Lake on the 13th. 2013 marks Pioneer Days’ 33rd year.
“Pioneer Days is a natural fit for antiques, because of its focus on Negaunee’s history,” comments Carole Prisk, owner of Tickled Pink Antiques in Negaunee. “The town was founded when iron ore was discovered here in 1844, and attracted a lot of immigrants when Jackson Mine opened in 1845. There’s a lot of history here, and a lot of old items end up in the shops.”
