June 27, 2013 — The M-26 reconstruction project in Laurium remains on schedule, and contractors are moving on to the next phase of work Friday.

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is reconstructing about 1 mile of M-26 in downtown Laurium, from Isle Royale Street to Boundary Street, and on Osceola Street from M-26 to Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital. The project includes recreating historic concrete pavement, installing sidewalks and lighting, and improving underground water main and drainage.

The first layer of paving is complete on westbound M-26 (Lake Linden Avenue) and half of Hecla Street, and work will now begin on eastbound M-26 and the second half of Hecla Street. The detour route for M-26 traffic will remain the same: Isle Royale Street and Third Street.

“Motorists, residents and business owners have been very understanding of the inconveniences construction brings,” said Al Anderson, delivery engineer for MDOT’s Ishpeming Transportation Service Center (TSC). “We’ll continue to listen to any concerns, and address them as quickly as possible.”

Phase 2, which should begin in late July, will include reconstruction of a two-block portion of M-26 between Boundary Street and Hecla Street, and one block of Osceola Street. During Phase 2, M-26 traffic will detour on Lake Linden Avenue and US-41 back to M-26.

The entire project is scheduled to be completed by Oct. 31.
