Rapid River Boating Access Site to Temporarily Close June 17 for Improvements

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) recently announced that on Monday, June 17, the Rapid River boating access site in Delta County will begin a temporary closure for installation of a new concrete boat ramp.

Work will be completed by a DNR construction crew. The boat launch is expected to be open to the public by the end of June. The new concrete boat ramp is the final phase of project work that started earlier this year with channel dredging from the launch ramp to Whitefish River.

While the Rapid River boating access site is unavailable, boaters may consider Kipling, Little Bay de Noc U.S. Forest Service Campground, and Gladstone Municipal Marina as alternate launches in the area. Information on other public boating access sites, harbors and marinas throughout the state is available at www.mcgi.state.mi.us/MRBIS/.

This project is funded through the Michigan State Waterways Fund, a restricted fund derived from boat registration fees, and the Michigan marine fuel tax, which is used for the construction, operation and maintenance of recreational boating facilities, harbors and inland waterways.

For more information or updates about this project, contact Jeff Kakuk, J.W. Wells State Park unit supervisor, at 906-863-9747.
