Fort Wilkins Historic State Park to host Lake Fanny Hooe Ice Fishing Tournament Feb. 9

Fort Wilkins Historic State Park in Copper Harbor will host the second annual Lake Fanny Hooe Ice Fishing Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 9, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The fishing tournament is sponsored by the Pines Resort, McCabe Distributing Company and Seventh Street Station.

“This ice fishing tournament is the result of our sponsors and volunteers seeking to promote youth fishing opportunities, and the Keweenaw Peninsula’s excellent splake fishery,” said Fort Wilkins park supervisor Robert Strittmatter. “All proceeds from the event will be donated to DNR Fisheries Division to support splake population management in the Keweenaw.”

There is a $10 registration fee for adult anglers. Participants will compete for a first-place prize of $75 and second-place prize of $50 in three categories: largest trout, walleye and perch. There is no charge to participate in the youth ice fishing contest. Youth anglers will be awarded for the three largest fish caught.

All participants must register at the Pines Resort prior to going onto the ice. Registration begins at 6 a.m. the day of the tournament. The Pines Resort is located just outside of the park on US-41 in Copper Harbor.

Plowed parking lots within Fort Wilkins Historic State Park will be available to participants for access to the ice, and the weigh-in station will be located at the lake’s boat launch.

For more information about the fishing tournament, contact Strittmatter at 906-289-4215 or visit www.michigan.gov/ftwilkins.
