Peter White Public Library Selected in Muslim Journeys Bookshelf Program

State Humanities Council, Libraries Receive Bookshelf Program

LANSING— The Michigan Humanities Council, along with 46 Michigan libraries – including Peter White Public Library in Marquette, Michigan, has been selected to receive the Muslim Journeys Bookshelf, a project of the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Bridging Cultures initiative. There were 842 libraries and state humanities councils selected throughout the nation.

Developed by the NEH and American Library Association (ALA), the Muslim Journeys Bookshelf is intended to address both the need and desire of the American public for trustworthy and accessible resources about Muslim beliefs and practices, and the cultural heritage associated with Islamic civilizations. Each participating library receives 25 books, three films and one-year access to Oxford Islamic Studies Online.

MHC partnered and wrote letters of support for the Capital Area District Library (Lansing), Michigan State University Libraries (East Lansing), Ferris State University (Big Rapids), East Lansing Public Library, Ypsilanti District Library and Eastern Michigan University (Ypsilanti). MHC will partner in programming with select libraries.

The Humanities Council is inviting all selected Michigan libraries to apply for a Quick Grant – awards up to $500 – to assist with program funding directly related to Muslim Journeys Bookshelf. These grants are awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis and cannot be guaranteed. The NEH, in collaboration with ALA, has also announced that up to 125 libraries and state councils will receive a $4,500 programming grant to host a Let’s Talk about It reading and discussion series featuring materials in the Muslim Journeys Bookshelf.

Selected libraries may apply for MHC Quick Grants online at www.michiganhumanities.org. NEH/ALA grants must be submitted by March 29 by visiting www.programminglibrarian.org/muslimjourneys. Your library must have been selected to host a bookshelf in order to apply for ALA grants.
