Plunge to Help Keep
Special Olympics Michigan
Athletes Healthy!

For more than 10 years, Special Olympics has been serving athletes by offering free health screenings and health information at local, regional and World Games. In the process, Special Olympics has become the largest global public health organization dedicated to serving people with intellectual disabilities.

Through the Healthy Athletes® initiative Special Olympics Michigan strives to provide our athletes free health screenings and information on the importance of living a healthy lifestyle. Athletes are able to participate in many of these free health screenings at most state level competitions.

Components of the Healthy Athletes® program include:

Fit Feet – free pediatric screenings evaluating ankles, feet, lower extremity bio-mechanics, and proper shoe and sock gear.

FUNfitness – free physical therapy screenings designed to assess and improve physical strength, flexibility and balance, and educate athletes and parents on the importance of staying physically fit and flexible.

Health Promotion – free screenings that offer health information and advice in the areas of nutrition, sun safety, bone density, tobacco cessation, and physical fitness.

Healthy Hearing – free hearing screenings and tests for cerumen (ear wax) and otoacoustic emissions test designed to ensure proper audiological care.

Opening Eyes – free vision and eye health screenings where athletes receive prescription eyewear, sunglasses and sports goggles.

Special Smiles – free dental screening, oral health information and instructions on brushing and flossing properly, as well as providing preventative supplies like toothbrushes and toothpaste.

MedFest – free physical examinations.

Make the commitment. Raise money. Dress up in a zany costume. Jump into frigid water. Watch a friend jump. Experience the power of plunging!
