Haunted Bog Walk Press Release October 25th, 26th, and 27th

Bizarre beasts, grotesque ghouls, and mysterious monsters await you! A late night stroll through the Presque Isle Bog Walk takes on a very different atmosphere during MooseWood Nature Center’s annual Haunted Bog Walk Thursday, Friday and Saturday, October 25th, 26th, and 27th.

Each night from 7pm-9pm, allow ghostly line leaders to take you on a spellbinding adventure through a transformed bog. For 20 chilling minutes you will be led through a land where ghouls lurk under the Boardwalk, zombies roam through the spruces, maniacs wielding chain saws run rampant through the darkness, and ghosts float menacingly throughout the forest. Come and join us for this chilling Halloween experience!

For those wanting a less heart-stopping Halloween Experience, MooseWood also hosts the Friendly Frights Forest, a series of Halloween crafts, face painting and games that can be enjoyed by all ages from 6-9pm each night.

This annual event marks the biggest fundraiser for Moosewood, a nonprofit organization, located on Presque Isle. The ticket fee of $7 for adults and $5 for kids 12 and under, helps to generate the money needed to provide nature, outdoor and science programming, help pay staff salaries, as well as feed all the MooseWood critters: turtles, frogs, snakes, and gerbils.

Volunteers are a significant part of the Haunted Bog. Each year student organizations from Northern Michigan University, RSVP (a local “seniors” volunteer group), high school students, Moose-Wood members, staff and Board create “scare stations” throughout the bog, dunes and fields.

The Haunted Bog pits the creative ingenuity of local organizations against each other as they compete for the title of scariest/most creative scare station during the weekend.  Props, costumes, recorded sounds, and acting abilities all figure into the overall effect of each group.  Feedback from participants and tour leaders helps determine the winner who will receive a small cash prize for their effort.

TWELTH ANNUAL HAUNTED BOG Walk

In the middle of the Pool Building, a concession area serves hot cider and hot chocolate, donated food and healthy snacks by a number of local restaurants and shops.

Weather plays a huge part of the weekend, and board members hold their breath as they wait to see if it cooperates.  A little mist actually adds a little atmosphere to an eerie evening, but cold rain creates a more challenging evening. Cold, wet weather is also tough on the brave volunteers who have to sit out in a scary bog for more than two hours each night hoping they don’t have a frightening encounter with the bog’s own creatures of the night.

Dawn Marsh, Haunted Bog Walk Volunteer Coordinator, is a student at Northern Michigan University and is working in conjunction with the MooseWood’s executive board and volunteers to coordinate this event. “The Haunted Bog Walk has always been one of my favorite Halloween events; it’s a great fundraiser for MooseWood and is a fun event that brings together the Marquette and NMU communities in a friendly atmosphere that’s great for families and individuals of all ages,” says Ms. Marsh.

Andrew Bek, MooseWood Nature Center Executive Director.

Approximately 100 volunteers make this event possible.

With a limited staff, MooseWood Nature Center depends on an active board, and volunteers. Board members: Bob Kahl, Doug Russell, Danielle Miller, Linda O’Brien, Sue Payant, Tiffany Rantanen, Niko Economides, Christie Bleck, Bud Hendrick, and Scot Stewart.
