DeVos Art Museum Presents “You Complete Me: Mediating Relationships in Contemporary Art”

MARQUETTE, Mich.—Northern Michigan University’s DeVos Art Museum will present “You Complete Me: Mediating Relationships in Contemporary Art.” The exhibit opens Monday, Oct. 1, and runs through Sunday, Nov. 11. Several events will occur in conjunction with the exhibit. All will be held in the DeVos Art Museum and are free unless otherwise noted.
Atlanta-based photographer Jill Frank, whose work is part of “You Complete Me,” will speak at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5.
A listening party with Chicago-based InCUBATE and guest Eric May will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, at Upfront and Company in downtown Marquette. This will be followed by a dance party with InCUBATE and May serving as DJs. InCUBATE is a research group dedicated to new approaches toward arts administration and funding. It is represented in the NMU exhibit.
A film screening of “twohundredfiftysixcolors” is scheduled at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20. The 16mm film is composed of animated gifs curated by Jason Lazarus, whose work is featured in the exhibit, and Eric Fleishauer. Both will discuss the film after the screening.
Reconfigured furniture pieces by NMU students and community members will be unveiled at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26. Chicago-based band the New Materialists will perform using musical instruments and technology based upon defunct furniture parts. The New Materialists’ work is on display as part of the “You Complete Me” exhibition.
A poetry reading and open mic hosted by poet and The Grove Behind author Andrea Scarpino will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8. Scarpino is the creative dissertation coordinator at Union Institute and University’s cohort doctorate program in interdisciplinary studies. She will read selections inspired by visual art and a poetry open mic will follow.
“You Complete Me” features works that can be completed only with the involvement of others. This causes the artists and artwork to become mediators, asking the viewer to negotiate their perspective by becoming part of the work.
DeVos Art Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Wednesday and Friday; noon to 8 p.m. Thursday; and 1-4 p.m. weekends. For more information, call 227-2235 or visit www.nmu.edu/DeVos.
