Spend a relaxing Sunday afternoon learning the benefits of the traditional Finnish sauna with Finnish artist Dar Fredrikson. Fredrikson will be at the Porkies Folk School in the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park from 1-4 p.m. on Sunday June 17, discussing sauna history and cleansing techniques and reading from “Vainamoinen’s Bathing Words” in both Finnish and English. Participants will make a saunavihta (sauna whisk) and a kindling bundle.
The class will conclude with Finnish egg coffee and homemade cinnamon sweet rolls while guest artist Kay Martin Seppala demonstrates the music of the five- and 10-string kanteles.
Participants wishing to end the day with a sauna should indicate their intention when enrolling and bring two towels to the class. Directions to the sauna will be provided at the class. Cost of the class is $35 including materials. For information on Folk School classes or to register, visit www.porkies.org or call 906-884-4886.
