A THOUSAND CLOWNS- PLAY by Herb Gardner
The 2012 Lake Superior Theatre Season starts with our very talented Artistic Director Shelley Russell who raises the curtain on our 2012 season with A Thousand Clowns on July 6,7,8, and 11-15. The year is 1962 and bachelor uncle, Murray Burns, is endeavoring to rear his precocious nephew in N.Y.C When Social Services arrive on the scene to insure that the nephew is receiving a proper upbringing, he finds himself solving their problems. Eventually, he must go back to work or lose his nephew, or he might marry the social worker. In today’s world of job insecurity we can all relate! Clowns features favorite LST actor BG Bradley playing the hero who is a perpetual Peter Pan; nevertheless a great father. Attractive Monica Nordeen plays the romantic interest…the social worker. Do your options in life seem to be totally selling out or completely dropping out? Enjoy a comedic evening at LST and relate to the free spirit in all of us.
DANDELION COTTAGE- play adaptation by Ron Riekki from the book by Carroll Watson Rankin
On July 18-22 and 25-29 we will be treated to a special adaptation by Ron Riekki of Carroll Watson Rankin’s Dandelion Cottage. Director Bobby Glenn Brown is planning a great adventure. Dandelion Cottage is a story of four young girls who take over a small, deserted home and fix it up for their use as a clubhouse. They earn the right to use the cottage as their own for a whole summer as long as they pull all of the dandelions from the lawn. Dandelion Cottage provides a little window into what growing up as a young girl in a Midwestern town was like in the very early twentieth century. It is interesting to contrast the freedom these girls had with the overly scheduled childhood of today. This local story adaptation will warm your heart and bring back wonderful memories. Leading up to the play, the Peter White Library and the History Center have planned an ambitious agenda for June with amazing events during Dandelion Month.
THE MOUSE THAT ROARED- play adapted by Christopher Sergel based on the book by Leonard Wibberly presented by Lake Superior Youth Theatre
The Lake Superior Youth Theatre presentation roars on August 1-5 and 8-12. We extend our grateful appreciation to the L.G.Kaufman Foundation for providing scholarships for this LSYT production. The Mouse That Roared will be directed by Courtney Brown and she hereby invites all of you to a most amusing display of fine acting during the LST summer season. Nestled in the Alps is a tiny country by the name of Grand Fenwick, and it is about to go bankrupt if something drastic is not done! So the Duchess Gloriana and her counsel decide that declaring war with the United States is the best solution to their problems – then they can be rehabilitated! Something goes terribly awry though, and the Duchess and her counsel are dismayed with the soldiers of Grand Fenwick return home, roaring victoriously over the U.S.! With a quality cast of actors and actresses, and a hilarious script, this play is bound to split your sides with laughter. This rare comedy uses the magic of LST to invite you to enjoy the delight of the impossible at possibly the best little theatre on the waterfront in the United States!
BOBBY GLENN BROWN AND FRIENDS: A NIGHT OF BROADWAY CABARET
Last but not least is a night of Broadway on the waterway featuring Bobby Glenn Brown and Friends. Directed by Denise Clark, this will be an amazing evening Cabaret. Local favorite Bobby Glenn Brown, and his friends will enchant their audiences singing fresh arrangements of classic standards, romantic ballads, songs from Broadway and more! Solos by Bobby will be highlighted, along with duets and group numbers sure to enthrall, surprise, and entertain the entire family! This is your chance to enjoy these engaging professionals in the quaint atmosphere at the boathouse. Start off the evening sipping a beverage on the shore, and then enjoy the show and an elegant Death by Chocolate dessert under the stars during intermission. This will be a fabulous magical memory maker! Seating is limited and these performances will surely be sold out!
DRAMA AND DREAMS PLAYSCAPE SUMMER YOUTH THEATRE CAMP
LST is additionally proud to announce the fourth annual Drama and Dreams Playscape Summer Theatre Camp which will take place August 20-24, 2012. Students aged 8 – 14 (with an emphasis on special needs enrollment) will be working together to gain socialization skills as they learn about theatre, costume and set design, stage make-up, facial expression, voice projection, team building and leadership. The students will sing songs, tell stories, read poetry and share their positive energy with volunteers and staff in a fun, safe and creative environment. On Thursday, August 23, the campers will be giving a unique theatre performance for family and friends in the Community Room of the Peter White Public Library. This performance will showcase their talents, as well as the performing arts skills they have cultivated at the camp. This activity is supported by the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs, a partner agency of the National Endowment for the Arts, and the CUPPAD Regional Commission. Lake Superior Theatre, Inc. is able to provide this wonderful opportunity for children of the Upper Peninsula thanks to a $1,500 grant from the CUPPAD Regional Commission. This camp would not be possible without this grant funding, and we are most grateful for their generous support. Email us at lstplayhouse@gmail.com or call LST for registration information.
