NMU Present Spelling Bee Musical April 17 through Saturday, April 21.

MARQUETTE, MI — Northern Michigan University’s Forest Roberts Theatre will present the Broadway musical The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee Tuesday, April 17 through Saturday, April 21. Performances begin at 7:30 p.m., with an additional 1 p.m. matinee on Saturday. Tickets are $10 for students and $15 for the general public. They are available at any E-Z Ticket outlet.

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee features six young people in the throes of puberty, overseen by grown-ups who barely managed to escape childhood themselves. The students learn that winning isn’t everything and that losing doesn’t necessarily make you a loser. The musical is a tale of overachievers, angst and the experience of six adolescent outsiders vying for the spelling championship of a lifetime.

Paul Truckey directs the production. The cast members and their roles are: NMU sophomore Erin Powley of West Branch, Olive Ostrovsky; Brian Dettmann of Marquette, Chip Tolentino; John Sarkela of Marquette, Mitch Mahoney; Susan Boyle of Marquette, Rona Lisa Peretti; sophomore Meghan Marquardt of Eau Claire, Wis., Logainne Schwartzandgrubenierre; junior Adam Lowe of Baraboo, Wis., William Barfee; junior Pierce Huxtable of Neenah, Wis., Panch; freshman Abby Schneck from Burnsville, Minn., March Park; and senior Aaron Sarka from Seward, Alaska, Leave Coneybear.
