Grammy-Winning Jazz Singer Performs in Marquette

MARQUETTE, Michigan — Grammy Award-winning Brazilian jazz singer Luciana Souza and her trio will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 22, in Kaufman Auditorium. The event is part of Northern Michigan University’s International Performing Arts Series. Tickets are priced as follows: students, $6 in advance/$7 at the door; NMU employees/seniors 60+, $14 advance/$16 door; and general public, $19 advance/$21 door. They can be purchased at all NMU EZ Ticket outlets or online at www.nmu.edu/tickets.

Souza’s trio features guitarist Romero Lumbambo and percussionist Cyro Baptista. The São Paulo native grew up in a family of Bossa Nova innovators. Her work as a performer transcends traditional boundaries of musical style, offering solid roots in jazz, sophisticated lineage in world music and an enlightened approach to classical repertoire and new music. She has performed and recorded with Herbie Hancock, Paul Simon, Bobby McFerrin and others. Her discography includes four Grammy-nominated albums. To mark the anniversary of Brazilian Duos, which won a Grammy a decade ago, Souza plans to release Duos III this year, along with a tribute to trumpet player and singer Chet Baker.

In addition to fronting her trio, Souza has been a prominent soloist in two works by composer Osvaldo Golijov: La Pasion According to St. Mark and Oceana. She has performed with the Bach Akademie Stuttgart, the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Brooklyn, New York and Los Angeles Philharmonic orchestras. From 2005-2010, she was the Jazz Artist in Residence with the San Francisco Performances.
