MARQUETTE, Mich.—The Student Leader Fellowship Program at Northern Michigan University and the community of Marquette have been selected as a joint finalist for the 2012 Michigan Campus Compact Campus-Community Partnership Award. The winner will be announced Jan. 30 at MCC’s 15th Service-Learning and Civic Engagement Institute Awards Ceremony and Dinner in East Lansing.
The SLFP recruits professionals from the area to serve as student fellow mentors in the first year of the program. During the second and final year, student fellows apply the leadership skills they have developed by planning, organizing and implementing a community service internship with local organizations. The internship component results in about 4,500 hours of community service annually.
Northern’s SLFP received another honor recently as this year’s Dalton Institute’s Best Practices Award winner. The honor includes complimentary 2012 Dalton Institute on College Student Values registration for up to two people involved in the award-winning best practice; a $500 award; recognition at the Dalton Institute on College Student Values Feb. 2-4; a presentation on the program during a session at the institute; and consideration for publication in the Journal of College and Character and/or the Character Clearinghouse.
