Visit the Michigan Historical Museum Oct. 22 to Hear Stories, See Artifacts from Archaeologists’ Recent Digs

Have you ever wondered what people will learn about you someday through the things you leave behind? Visit the Michigan Historical Museum Oct. 22 for an intriguing look at how archaeologists and anthropologists uncover artifacts to study the past. Learn about artifacts found at Michigan State University (MSU); and at a former Hillsdale County jail site.

This event is the fourth weekend of History Beneath Your Feet, a series of archaeology-themed programs at the museum sponsored by the State Historic Preservation Office, Michigan State Housing Development Authority.

Oct. 22 at 1 p.m.

Uncovering MSU’s past: Dr. Lynne Goldstein, professor of anthropology, and Campus Archaeologist Katy Meyers present the MSU Archaeology team’s latest find from their recent dig near Beaumont Tower .

Oct. 22 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Junior Archaeologists: Kids can help Archaeologist Dr. Misty Jackson from Arbre Croche Cultural Resources study actual artifacts from the Jonesville Log Jail site in Hillsdale County

The History Beneath Your Feet Series continues at the museum on Nov. 5, with a visit from Dr. Norm Sauer, director of the Forensic Anthropology Lab at MSU. Visit www.michigan.gov/museum and click on “View All Events” for more detailed information on the series.

While at the museum, be sure to stop at the first-floor exhibits gallery where the commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War continues with the Plowshares Into Swords special exhibit.

Michigan Historical Museum admission is $6 for adults 18-64. Children through age 5 are free; youth ages 6-17 pay an optional $2; and seniors 65 and up pay $4. Annual passes are available. Visit www.michigan.gov/museum for details.

The museum is open seven days a week. It is located inside the Michigan Library and Historical Center , 702 West Kalamazoo St. , Lansing . The museum and visitor parking are on the north side of Kalamazoo Street , two blocks east of M. L. King Jr. Boulevard . Weekend parking is free.
