FLORIDA HIKER SAVED BY 6TH GRADERS:

A group of students on a canoe trip in Florida found a missing Tampa hiker on Friday (September 23rd). Francis Netto had missing missing for two days when the children found him as they canoed down Hillsborough River. He said he accidentally fell asleep and when he woke up his cell phone was dead and it was already dark. When he found the river, he tried to float down it but got out when he saw an alligator. One of the studients — 12-year-old Kadisha Avillah — said, “Next time he goes hiking,” said Kadisha Avillah, 12, “he shouldn’t go alone.” Netto is reportedly fine and will make a full recovery. ALABAMA TOWN TO LET OFFENDERS CHOOSE JAIL OR CHURCH:

Staring next week, the town of Bay Minette in Alabama launches an alternative sentencing program that will allow a judge to give misdemeanor offenders the choice of jail or church. Offenders could be allowed to work their sentences off by going to church every Sunday for a year instead of going to jail and paying a fine. The local branch of the American Civil Liberties Union is asking Bay Minette officials to suspend the program because they believe it violates the Constitution. ACLU Executive Director Olivia Turner said, “But it is a fundamental principle of the Establishment Clause that the government cannot force someone to attend church. When the alternative to going to church is going to jail, the so-called ‘choice’ available to offenders is no choice at all.” (Huffington Post)

600-YEAR-OLD DOG EATING FESTIVAL CANCELLED:

A 600-year-old dog eating festival in Qianxi, China was cancelled this week after an Internet outcry over the way the dogs are killed. In the annual festival, fifteen thousand dogs are slaughtered to commemorate a battle fought in the town. According to reports, before the ancient battle took place, an invading army killed all of the town’s dogs to avoid being exposed by their barking. Once the town of Qianxi was captured, the army ate the dog meat in celebration. After pictures of this year’s killings were posted on the Internet, thousands of people called for the Chinese government to ban the festival. (CNN)

During Police Chase, Suspect Calls the Cops

A Park City Utah man called the cops as he was leading officers on a 30-mile highway chase, last Thursday, reports KSL-TV. The 20-year-old driver refused to stop for a speeding ticket and cops gave chase on U.S. Highway 40. With patrol cars in tow, the man called the police to tell them to stop chasing him and leave him alone; Duchesne County sheriff’s deputies and Utah Highway Patrol troopers eventually set up spike strips to end the chase, but the driver stopped before hitting them and was arrested.

Police sources were told that the man was distraught over issues with his girlfriend, and had a bad morning. Instead of a speeding ticket, the fleeing driver landed in Wasatch County Jail.

Morgue Prepared If Dead Bodies Come Back to Life

Dead men tell no tales, but just in case one wants to speak, a morgue in Turkey has installed motion detectors inside each corpse drawer so they’ll know when a “dead” person comes back alive. Orange.co.uk quotes Turkey’s Anatolia news agency as saying the morgue’s refrigerated corpse drawers have also been equipped with internal door handles just in case. A morgue official tells the news agency, “If the patient, proclaimed dead by doctors, awakens from a state of unconsciousness, then we consider each and every possibility.” The morgue in the Turkish province of Malatya has a capacity for 36 bodies.

Headbutt Ends Gas Station Stick-Up

A gas station attendant in Yonkers, New York used his head — literally — to stop a man from holding him up at gunpoint. According to News 12, the suspect walked into a Gulf station early Saturday morning asked the clerk for cigarettes before whipping out a semi-automatic pistol and demanding all the cash in the register. The clerk, named Abulahab — who was a nine year veteran of the Jordanian army — slowly doled out some cash before grabbing the gun and jerking the suspect close enough over the counter to deliver a powerful headbutt.

Dazed, the suspect let go of the gun and stumbled out of the store, with the clerk hot on his heels. The suspect escaped, but his identity — and their scuffle — was clearly caught on the store’s surveillance camera. Abulahab even showed up to work later that day, with a red welt on his head to show for his heroism.

Piranhas Putting a Bite on Brazilian Beachgoers

Like something out of a schlocky horror movie, the swimmers at a popular beach in Piaui, Brazil are afraid to hit the water, thanks to an over population of piranhas. The toothy creatures bit nearly 100 beachgoers last weekend alone; most of the nips were done to the bathers’ heels and toes, according to UOL Noticias and the New Zealand Herald.

Environmentalists have been trying to curb the piranhas’ appetite for humans by introducing more tilapia fish into local waters — presumably a tastier alternative to people.

Rome May Ban “Living Statues”

They’re a fixture in every tourist trap in virtually every city in the world, but Rome has had it with people who make money pretending to be statues. Federico Mollicone, deputy culture chief in Italy’s capital city said “Living statues demonstrate no artistic activity, to the extent that they can’t be compared to mimes, and they amount to a veritable racket,” according to AFP.

Aside from banning living statues, another regulation from Mollicone that will go before a vote soon seeks to quiet street performers after 10 p.m.

Naked Protesters Blast New Nude Rules

(NOTE NATURE) In the Castro neighborhood of San Francisco, dozens of naked people gathered for a “nude-in” in part to protest Supervisor Scott Wiener’s proposed nudity restrictions. While walking around naked is perfectly legal in San Francisco — provided the person isn’t aroused — Weiner had called for new rules mandating nudists at least cover their seats with a towel or something similar when sitting in public places.

The demonstration is something of a tradition ahead of the city’s very family unfriendly Folsom Street Fair — during which demonstrations of bondage and other sexual fetish lifestyles are celebrated — but this year’s nude-in had more of a protest feel, thanks to Wiener’s proposed rules, according to the San Francisco Gate. Some carried signs reading “Nudity is Not a Crime,” and “Get Your Hate Off My Body.” Weiner’s regulations stressed sanitary, not moral concerns, as well as “some basic courtesy and decency toward [nudists’] fellow citizens when they are naked.”
