Campers at Baraga State Park in the Upper Peninsula can now connect to a free wireless Internet signal, the Department of Natural Resources announced today.
The wireless signal, available to campers from the comfort of their own campsite, is provided for free through the support of the Baraga Friends of the Park non-profit group and the Baraga Telephone Company.
“The ability to connect wirelessly to the Internet is just another amenity that makes Baraga State Park such an attractive place to camp. Park visitors will now be able to stay in touch with friends or even work remotely from their campsite,” said DNR Park Supervisor Dan Dowdy. “We greatly appreciate the support of our friends group, without which we wouldn’t be able to offer this service.”

The Recreation Passport has replaced motor vehicle permits for entry into Michigan state parks, recreation areas and state-administered boat launch fee sites. This new way to fund Michigan outdoor recreation opportunities also helps to preserve state forest campgrounds, trails, and historic and cultural sites in state parks, and provides park development grants to local communities.
Michigan residents can purchase the Recreation Passport ($10 for motor vehicles; $5 for motorcycles) by checking “YES” on their license plate renewal forms, or at any state park or recreation area. Nonresident motor vehicles must still display a valid nonresident Recreation Passport ($29 annual; $8 daily) to enter a Michigan state park, recreation area or state-administered boat launch fee site; these can be purchased at any state park or recreation area, or through the Michigan e-Store at www.michigan.gov/estore.
