Northern Michigan University and Marquette Area Public School Partnership WiMAX Agreement

Marquette Area Public Schools (MAPS) and Northern Michigan University (NMU) recently signed an agreement that leverages the advantages 4G wireless technology brings to University students, faculty and teachers in Marquette. This partnership will help improve education quality while MAPS and NMU
work to deliver services at the lowest possible cost. The agreement allows both institutions to share facility resources in delivering wireless access to school networks throughout Marquette and Harvey.
NMU will now be able to extend WiMAX to a larger service area by placing wireless transmission points at Marquette Senior High School and Cherry Creek Elementary School. The primary benefit for NMU will be increased service and reliability to campus network services for students, faculty and staff. At MAPS,
enhanced wireless internet access will be available throughout district buildings that will facilitate collaborative NMU/MAPS activities.
Wireless broadband and WiMAX in particular, offers educators the opportunity to change the way instruction is delivered by extending the classroom into the community. Adding WiMAX technology to traditional tools like text books, paper and pencils will help give students a competitive edge as they
acquire the skills needed for 21st century jobs in a global market.
