Climbing rocks is not just for kids anymore. The sport of rock climbing is gaining popularity rapidly in the UP as a reflection of the pristine environment and welcoming community. With all the resources readily available in Marquette and the surrounding areas, it sure makes sense.
I have been climbing for all of the four years I’ve lived in the UP. I started at the local indoor wall and the intoxicating combination of learning an attractive new skill and the supportive community has kept me actively involved ever since. Every person I have taken out since has equally fallen in love.
In contrast to other high adrenaline sports, climbing is a low impact realtionship that the climber can have with nature. Sports like snowboarding and skiing seem to adopt the idea of “what can the outdoors do for me?” compared to climbing’s, “what can I do in nature?”. The idea of working with nature to overcome my perceptions of my own physical and mental limitation is far more appealing.
A great thing about climbing is that it is so attainable to a great range of people and skills. I’ve taken toddlers climbing and there isn’t a reasonable cap on how far it can take you. Even in the winter there is “ice climbing” and a festival dedicated to it hosted by Down Wind Sports.
