National Police Week Celebrated In Marquette County, MI

Marquette County Sheriff Mike Lovelace joined Mark and Walt this morning to discuss National Police Week. The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office is joining communities across Michigan and the United States this week to commemorate National Police Week.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy designated May 15th as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which May 15th falls as National Police Week. This week, Sheriff Lovelace and his staff will honor and remember those law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice, as well as the family members, friends and fellow officers they left behind.

You can join the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office and the Michigan Sheriffs’ Association in honoring these fallen officers. You can show your support by “flying the blue”. Attach a royal blue ribbon to your car antennae during National Police Week. Your show of support will mean a lot to the brave men and women who serve and protect you and your family on a daily basis.

This year, the names of 316 officers killed in the line of duty have been added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC. These 316 officers include 152 officers who were killed during 2010, plus 164 officers who died in previous years but whose stories of sacrifice had been lost to history until now.
