Over 55,000 Power Outages In Upper Michigan

A wide-reaching band of severe thunderstorms moving across the Upper Peninsula overnight resulted in power outages that caused several schools to be closed or delayed this morning.  Many communities across the U.P. were left without power for several hours following those storms.  According to the Upper Peninsula Power Company, over 55-thousand of their customers were affected by these outages overnight.

Crews have been working to restore power to all of the affected areas as soon as possible.

Telephone and internet service has also been disrupted in many areas around the U.P. due to the severe weather.  The power did stay on in the Marquette area, but many areas such as the Keweenaw Peninsula, Ishpeming, Negaunee and Munising had power outages that affected nearly 100-percent of residents.

According to a statement this morning from UPPCO, they have not determined the official cause for these widespread power outages and they have no estimated time for the full restoration of electrical service.
