A full house greeted President Barack Obama as he was in Marquette today to outline his plan to expedite the building of high-speed wireless services to allow businesses faster growth, students to learn more, and public safety officials to access nationwide interoperable mobile communications. The President outlined the new Wireless Innovation and Infrastructure Initiative today in a speech delivered this afternoon at the Vandament Arena at Northern Michigan University.
According to the White House, Marquette was selected as the location for the address because it is a model city where local businesses have been able to grow due to broadband access, with particular benefit in exporting goods to new markets around the world.
The President also was shown a demonstration of how the Northern Michigan University’s WiMAX wireless 4G network has enabled distance learning for university and community students.
The President opened his speech with a call out to all Green Bay Packer fans in the audience and congratulated the team on their Super Bowl victory. He then commented on the latest developments in Egypt, with the announced stepping down of long-time President Hosni Mubarek.
