Scandinavian Midsummer Festival – Presque Isle Park – June 19, 2010
The Scandinavian Midsummer Festival was held at Presque Isle Park in Marquette, Michigan on June 19, 2010.
The weather turned out to be beautiful despite forecasts for intermittent rain throughout the day.
Larger than usual crowds were present throughout the entire day to enjoy the variety of musicians, costumed dancers and ethnic food.
Vendors were on hand to peddle their goods in the “Tori” (Finnish for marketplace) which consisted of Scandinavian clothing, hand forged tools, weapons and accessories by a blacksmith, hand made wood products, hand made lotions and bath products and all sorts of ethnic food featuring pasties, juustua (Finnish cheese) and baked goods.
To cap off the night, Ronald Jarvinen and The Backwoods Boys played polka’s, shaddishes and a waltz or two for the public dance just before the lighting of the “Kokko” (Finnish for bonfire). The Olander’s capped off their day after celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary at the festival by lighting the bonfire.
