Marquette – Paul Taylor, author of “Orlando M. Poe: Civil War General and Great Lakes Engineer” will speak on Wednesday, May 19 at 7 p.m. in the Shiras Room at the Peter White Public Library.
Taylor will discuss the life Orlando M. Poe, a man Taylor believes to be one of the most influential yet underrated and overlooked Union soldiers of the Civil War. Following the war, Poe supervised the design and construction of numerous Great Lakes lighthouses. His most famous work was the design and construction of the largest shipping lock in the world at Sault Ste. Marie.
Copies of the book will be available for purchase, and a book signing will follow the presentation. Taylor is visiting Marquette as part of the Library of Michigan’s 2010 Michigan Notable Authors Tour.
