Negaunee – The Global Awareness Project at Negaunee High School is preparing for the school’s annual athletic shoe recycling program kickoff. Members will set up collection boxes for used tennis shoes at the NHS girls basketball game Friday February 19, and at the boys game on February 26.
The shoes will be shipped to the NIKE company for reuse as material for outdoor track and basketball courts in economically disadvantaged areas.
NHS students will raffle green bags featuring the logo of the NHS Green School recycling program. One raffle ticket will be issued for each pair of shoes donated. Others may purchase tickets, with proceeds going to help cover the cost of shipping the shoes.
All who donate shoes or buy tickets will receive an NHS green ribbon pin. Shoe collection boxes will be set up through March 19 at the high school, middle school and at Lakeview Elementary School.
