Marquette – The 21st annual Rico N. Zenti Upper Peninsula Winter Games for Special Olympians will be held Friday, January 16 and Saturday, January 17 in Marquette.
Alpine skiing competition takes place on Friday at Marquette Mountain beginning at 2 p.m. followed by a Dance Social from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Holiday Inn.
Opening Ceremonies start the day on Saturday at the Superior dome at NMU. Athletes from across the Upper Peninsula participate in the pageantry of this popular event. Northern Michigan University varsity athletes from many sports will participate along with athletes training at the United States Olympic Training Center and the NMU R.O.T.C.. The Opening Ceremonies feature welcoming comments from Northern and the host community, lighting of the Olympic torch, announcements of outstanding athletes and coached and concludes with the Special Olympic oath.
Ishpeming Kiwanis Club members will be on hand at the dome to serve breakfast and State Farm Insurance representatives serve as competition officials.
