The Marquette Senior High School Redmen varsity basketball team defeated the Negaunee Miners in their home opener, 51-37, on December 18, 2008.
The Redmen have high expectations this year and rightly so, returning several players from last year including all-time MSHS point leader, Joe Simon and 6'10″ center Eric Powers. Tyler Geary returns at point guard. They didn't disappoint the home crowd when they faced the Miners on Thursday, December 18th.
The Miner's really didn't have a good solution when faced with a 6'10″ Eric Powers posted under the net. Powers grabbed several rebounds, blocked a few shots and swatted basketballs out of the air like he was playing beach volleyball.
Dillon Menard had a hard time getting his offense going. He drove to the basket several times only to find Powers blocking the lane. He tried jump shots from outside and inside the paint but found little success.
Late in the third quarter, Marquette pulled their starters and let some of the other players get some playing time.
The breakdown per quarter is as follows; at the end of the first, 14-5 Marquette, end of the half, 29-8 Marquette, end of the third, 47-20 and the final score, 51-37.
