MARQUETTE, MI –
The Peter White Public Library and the City of Marquette Office of Arts and Culture are delighted to announce the opening reception event for the August/September exhibits in the Public Gallery Program. The event will take place Thursday, August 8th, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM and promises an evening of art, performance, and community connection.
The receptions, free and open to the public, will feature light refreshments generously provided by Friends of PWPL. The exhibits are accessible during regular Library hours and will be on display through the end of September.
Exhibits:
Deo Gallery: Alchemize: On Bodies & Clay by Niikah Hatfield & Marissa Marquardson. This exhibit merges contemporary dance with porcelain ceramics. At 6:30 PM, witness a live performance where dancers transform porcelain clay, leaving remnants that will become part of the exhibit. The Deo Gallery is located in the lower level of the PWPL in the City’s Arts & Culture Center and is supported by the Lake Superior Art Association.
Alchemize: On Bodies & Clay explores the intersection of contemporary movement and porcelain ceramics. The dancers’ performances will transform the clay through various states of matter, creating a dynamic and evolving art piece. When the performance concludes, the transformed remnants will remain as part of the exhibit, accompanied by dance film projections to create the illusion of movement and light. Alchemize is a cross-disciplinary collaboration that connects Hatfield and Marquardson’s artistic expressions and mediums through an immersive experience and invitation to consider what it means to be whole, beautiful, and alive.
Huron Mountain Club Gallery: Wimmelbilder by Elijah Haswell. Discover richly detailed digital illustrations that invite viewers of all ages to engage in interactive scavenger hunts. An artist Q&A will be held at 7:15 PM. The Huron Mountain Club Gallery is on the main level of PWPL.
Wimmelbilder, a German term meaning “richly detailed illustrations featuring numerous people, animals, and objects,” brings a sense of silliness and wonder akin to childhood seek-and-find books. Elijah Haswell’s colorful and interactive digital illustrations are designed to engage viewers of all ages, from young children to grandparents. Haswell aims to share goofiness and imagination, encouraging visitors to look deeper and engage with the art through print-out coloring pages and scavenger hunts. The exhibit will also feature process images alongside final pieces to showcase the evolution of the illustrations.
