AFT Michigan Celebrates Signing of Universal Background Checks, Safe Storage
MI AFT says: “Michigan takes historic step toward safer schools and communities”
Michigan – On Thursday, April 13, 2023, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed safe storage and universal background check bills into law. The Michigan American Federation of Teachers’ Union president had something to say about the matter.
The following response can be attributed to David Hecker, president of AFT Michigan:
“For years, Michiganders have been forced to watch tragedy after tragedy unfold with no action from our lawmakers—but thanks to Gov. Whitmer and the new legislative majority, our state has taken an important step forward. Students and educators deserve safe school environments where they can focus on teaching and learning, not running, hiding, or fighting, and the these laws will go a long way toward diminishing the ever-present threat of gun violence. And of course, the impact will go far beyond schools, making all our communities safer. I am grateful to all the lawmakers who have helped us get here, and I look forward to working alongside them to continue tackling this complicated problem.”
Seems as though the leadership at Michigan’s AFT organization is appreciative of the law. On twitter AFT president even calls the governor an ally in office. Mr. David Hecker wasted no time in putting out this statement on the course of action taken by Governor Gretchen Whitmer.
