History Program in Gwinn: Irish Miners in the Copper Country August 15, 2022

Irish Miners in the Copper Country Topic of History Program in Gwinn

The Forsyth Township Historical Society will present Irish Copper Miners
in the Michigan Copper Country, 1845-1900, featuring speaker William H. Mulligan, Jr., Monday, August 15th, at 7 pm at the Gwinn Clubhouse, on Maple Street in Gwinn. Admission is free for Society members and students, and $2.00 for others.

Dr. Mulligan, recently retired from Murray State University in Kentucky, will discuss the
role of Irish immigrants in the growth of copper mining in the Keeweenaw. Mining developed rapidly after 1845 and Irish miners, initially originating from County Tipperary and later from the Beara Peninsula of West Cork, were among the earliest arrivals and continued to be a significant part of the mining workforce and the community through WWI. Additionally the talk will discuss how language differences between the two groups affected each in their adjustment to life in America.
