State Rep. Joel Sheltrown, (D) Howell, surprised our local state representatives by taking the long drive north to attend a citizen's rally over the weekend (Feb. 16) in Marquette. Hunters, fishermen and various outdoor enthusiasts met to voice concerns about the departments of Natural Resources and Environmental Quality.Sheltrown noted several times the billions of dollars the various industries such as hunting, ORV's and even horse riding pump into Michigan's economy. He added that he feels the DNR needs to “get back to the basics” and focus on the needs and concerns of the citizens it serves. The chairman noted that he believes the DNR wastes a lot of time on issues such as banning ORV from county roads – an issue out of the department's jurisdiction in his opinion – rather than developing better pheasant hunting opportunities, or expanding fisheries explicitly for tournaments, a designated trail network, among many other issues.Rep. Sheltrown spent quite a while with Great Lakes Radio News during his short visit. We'll have more on Adam Carpenter's Outdoor Report throughout the week on WFXD. – Pete Mackin, UP to the Minute Report.
