ONTONAGON – The Department of Natural Resources budget should be more transparent. That's the feedback the Department's Natural Resources Commission gave late last week in Lansing.
NRC Commissioner J.R. Richardson of Ontonagon forwarded complaints he heard at last month's “Natural Resource User's” rally in Marquette – mainly regarding the DNR's convoluted budget.
“We're here to serve the people and the resource and we have to know what frustrates people and how we can be more accomodating to what the users need and that's what it's all about,” Richardson said on WFXD's Outdoor Show Friday.
Richardson, an employee at White Pine Electric and a former employee of Smurfit-Stone Container in Ontonagon, said the DNR's budget needs to work more like a business.
They're public funds, okay. The people should know where they are and have confidence we're spending it and using it and knowing where it's going,” he said. “The bottom line is you ought to know where you're at.”
