Volunteers, Commitment to Civil Rights are being sought for the 2006 MLK Project. To honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the hero within everyone, Great Lakes Center for Youth Development is again coordinating the Martin Luther King Service Day Project from January 16 to February 3, 2006. The Center is kicking off the 2006 Martin Luther King Service Day Project with a volunteer training on December 8, 2005, at Northern Michigan University in the Diversity Student Services Office, 3001 Hedgecock, beginning at 6 p.m. An additional volunteer training will be held January 12, 2006, 4 p.m., at The Center, 307 S. Front St., Marquette. The volunteers will visit fourth grade classrooms in Marquette and Alger counties to read excerpts from the book Heroes of America Martin Luther King, Jr. The project requires about 50 volunteers will work with the 800 or so fourth grade students in 16 Marquette and Alger county schools. The volunteer training is mandatory for new volunteers. Those who have participated in the program before are encouraged to come to the training and share their knowledge.
