11th ANNUAL RUNNING OF THE COPPERDOG 150 SLED DOG RACE BEGINS THIS FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 28

CALUMET, MI—Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula prepares to welcome mushers from across the Midwest for the 11th Annual running of the CopperDog 150 sled dog race. The race, sponsored by Incredible Bank, kicks on Friday evening, February 28th, in the historic downtown of Calumet, MI. The three-day race, which ends on March 1st, requires competitors to complete a 128.4-mile circuit of beautiful Keweenaw Peninsula in pursuit of a $26,000 purse. “The CopperDog 150 is a fantastic combination what makes the Keweenaw a special place to visit: the breathtaking natural beauty of the area, a spirit of adventure, and of course, lots of snow!”, explained Brad Barnett, Executive Director of the Keweenaw Convention & Visitors Bureau.”Lake-effect” snowstorms contribute to the average 273 inches of snowfall in the Keweenaw each year making the CopperDog 150 the perfect choice for a late season, end of February, beginning of March race.Teams of 10 dogs propel mushers through a three-stage, three-day race through the communities of Eagle Harbor, Copper Harbor and eventually back to Calumet. The event also includes two shorter distance races, the Copper Dog 80(85.4miles)and CopperDog25(23.5 miles). Last year, winner Martha Schouweiler of Irma, WI paced the field with a time of 10 hours, 45 minutes and five seconds. Schouweiler will be returning to defend her first-place finish against a field of mushers from throughout the Midwest with competitors coming from as far away as Montana and Ontario. For spectators, the highlight of the event is the night race start in the historic downtown of Calumet. Beginning at 4pm on Friday, visitors will be treated to live music at the Calumet Theatre and food from a variety of local restaurants and street vendors. A pre-race ceremony begins at 6 pm and the race starts-at 7 pm.The night is capped off by a fireworks display presented by Labatt Blue and Pisani Distributingat Agassiz Park.For more details on the CopperDog 150 and a full schedule of events, visit www.copperdog150.com
