Sister Cities Partnership Visit From Japan-Detroit Consulate-General

Marquette, MI – The Marquette Area Sister Cities Partnership is preparing to host three special guests from the Consulate-General of Japan in Detroit.

Tsutomu Nakagawa, Consul General, Nakagawa’s wife, and Ms. Mayuko Chashiro, Education, Culture and Public Relations Official will be in Marquette from August 12 – 14, during which they will meet with representatives from the MASCP and other community leaders in recognition and celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Sister City agreement between Marquette and Higashiomi, Shiga, Japan. This agreement was originally signed with Yokaichi in the Shiga Prefecture on August 13, 1979, and in 2005 the city changed its name to Higashiomi due to merging with small cities in their area.

Established in 1993 by the Government of Japan to serve in the states of Michigan and Ohio, the Consulate General of Japan in Detroit is responsible for protecting the interests of Japanese citizens and strengthening the Japan-U.S. alliance through furthering relations with local governments, companies, educational institutions, cultural organizations and the general public. Included in the itinerary are meetings with Northern Michigan University President Fritz Erickson and City of Marquette Mayor Fred Stonehouse, attendance and acknowledgement at the Marquette City Commission Meeting on the evening of August 12 and driving and walking tours of our community.
