Ishpeming, MI – Are you ready for an experiment in drama? Come see The Westwood Shakespeare Company’s production of Shakespeare Scenes: Tragedy, Comedy, History!
The Westwood High School Shakespeare Company presents a variety show featuring timeless interpretations of scenes from three different Shakespearean plays, and small slices of at least two more. Scenes will be presented in an experimental Black Box format, giving the audience a unique and intimate look at Shakespeare’s work. Shows are Thursday, February 28 and Friday, March 1, both at 7pm, in the Patriot Performing Arts Theatre. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased in the WHS office or at the door.
You’ll be very close to the actors in this unique format, according to Director, Maria Hoffman. Hoffman adds that this talented group of young people aged 14-18 have put together compelling scenes, from Macbeth, Richard III, Henry V, with a special opening derived from Hamlet, and at least one memorable line from The Tempest.
“It’s minimalist theatre,” adds Artistic Director, B.G. Bradley. “It gives all the kids a chance to just focus on character, without many of the technical aspects that create bigger shows. As an audience member you will be very close to the actors, and will feel as though you are a part of the scene. Costumes and special effects are kept at a minimum, but acting is at a premium. Lots of actors get a chance to shine in major Shakespearean roles.”
Bradley adds that with some the younger company members taking center stage, audience members will get a chance to see what the future holds for the company.
“Black Box is always exciting,” added Bradley
