NMU Honors Martin Luther King Jr.

Marquette, MI – Northern Michigan University will honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. with a week-long celebration. A Day of Service will be held on Monday, January 21. The event kicks off with a campus march for equality. Participants will assemble at noon in the lobby of the Forest Roberts Theatre. The march with proceed to the Lodge at The Woods student housing complex for a program titled “Poetry Without Borders: Let Freedom Ring” and light refreshments.

The Center for Student Enrichment (CSE) will sponsor the following service projects, beginning at 1:30 pm in the Lodge: making toys for dogs at UPAWS; knitting and crocheting hats, scarves and mittens for Room at the Inn; and creating Valentine’s cards for residents of the Jacobetti Home for Veterans. Students will also be at the U.P. Children’s museum at 2:30 p.m. to read books to youngsters and lead coloring projects.

Motivational speakers Donzell Dixson, Elijah Kondeh and Donte Curtis of Dixon Dynamics will address “Living Fearlessly” in a presentation at 7 pm Wednesday, January 23, in Jamrich 1320. The event is free and open to the public.

The Diversity Common Reader Program will distribute this year’s selection, Redefining Realness by Janet Mock, to NMU students on Friday, January 25. Free books and pizza will be available from 1-3 pm in the Hedgcock atrium outside the Multicultural Education and Resource Center.
